1. Mix together the sugar, butter, milk, eggs, almond extract, and poppy seeds in a large bowl. Add the flour, baking powder, and salt, and stir until just mixed.
2. Spoon the batter into a greased or papered mu?n tin. Fill the cups about 3/4 full, then sprinkle with sliced almonds. Bake in a preheated 350°F oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
3. Cool the muffins at least 10 minutes before removing from the tin.
