Fun Fact: Five Mississippians have made unforgettable marks in the world of football:

- Archie Manning (Drew) was one of the most exciting college football players in history. He holds a SEC-record 540 yards of total offense in a prime-time TV loss (33-32) to Alabama in 1969. He was drafted No. 2 overall by the New Orleans Saints in 1971 and had a 14-year NFL career.

- Jerry Rice (Crawford) is the greatest pass receiver in football history. He is the leading touchdown scorer in NFL history (194) and holds 13 other NFL records. He holds 11 Super Bowl records and has caught a record 33 passes for 589 yards and eight touchdowns in four Super Bowl appearances.

- Walter Payton’s (Columbia) accomplishments on and off the field help put Mississippi on the map. Known as “Sweetness,” Payton’s NFL career spanned 13 years. His 16,726 rushing yards rank second on the NFL’s all-time list. Payton had 10 seasons with 1,000 or more yards, and led the league in rushing four times. His career rushing attempts (3,838) and most games rushing for 100 yards or more (77) are among the NFL’s best.

- Brett Favre (Kiln) is as gutsy as they come. He makes things happen, and with the game on the line, you want him at quarterback. Favre is the only three-time MVP in NFL history. His NFL records include: most career touchdown passes (442), most career passing yards (61,655), most career pass completions (5,377), most career pass attempts (8,758), most career interceptions thrown (288), most consecutive starts among NFL quarterbacks (253; 275 total starts including playoffs), and most career victories as a starting quarterback (160).

- Steve McNair (Mount Olive) was exciting in high school, amazing in college, and dangerous in the NFL. He owns the Alcorn State record book, throwing eight touchdown passes in one game. McNair finished his college career with an NCAA record 16,823 total yards, a record for all divisions, and the NCAA I-AA record with 14,496 passing yards. He led the NFL’s Tennessee Titans to the Super Bowl in 2000 and had them within one game of the Super Bowl in 2003. —Van Dyess, Clarion-Ledger
