GRAIN'S GOODNESS

Print this Recipe

Whole grains have a lot to offer for hearth health. Take a look:

Fiber
Some grains, such as oats, barley, corn and rye, are good sources of soluble fiber, which research shows can help lower blood cholesterol levels.

Folic Acid
Whole-grain good can be a great source of folic acid; a vitamin researchers believe may help reduce the risk for heart disease. Folic acid helps break down and neutralize homocysteine, a substance produced when our body digests protein. Scientists believe a buildup of homocysteine may injure arteries and allow for the accumulation of cholesterol and plaque inside them.

Antioxidants
Whole grains contain vitamin E, selenium and flavonoids, also knows as antioxidants. These nutrients protect cells from being damaged by free radicals, which are substances that can make cholesterol more likely to build up inside arteries.

Good Source s of Whole Grains

Barley
Breads (whole wheat, rye and oat)
Brown Rice
Cereals (whole grain and whole wheat)
