In a mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar; add egg and beat well. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture; stir in apples and nuts. Pour into a buttered 8-inch baking pan. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes.
Sauce:
In a saucepan, combine butter, cream, and sugar. Bring mixture to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring constantly. Serve warm over cake squares.
