Make lists of what you need to speed up your shopping. Lists are especially important to keep from buying too much!
Shop for the basics, such as household goods, foods that will keep and bottled beverages at the supermarket, warehouse club or food cooperative. If you have a large freezer, you can purchase family-pack meats and poultry and individually freeze portions so you have them on hand.
Check out farmers markets, natural-food stores, ethnic-food stores or your local grocery store-you may discover some new ingredients you like and you can often find foods that are sold in smaller quantities.
Try salad bars that offer cut-up fresh vegetables and fruits for a great timesaver. They are also a great source if you just need a little bit of several ingredients for a stir-fry or other skillet meal. Check out the variety of salad dressings available there too!
Add flavor to foods without a lot of extra ingredients with prepared foods such as salsas, chutneys, relishes and marinades. Select canned and bottled goods in small or individual sizes: while it may seem more expensive than buying larger sizes, it can save you money in the long run and will help prevent waste.
Select ground meat, steaks or chops when you're cooking meat. They are the easiest cuts to cook for two. Enjoy roasts when you have guests, since they are best when at least two pounds of meat are cooked. Or cook a roast then freeze part of the leftovers.
Pick up a nice selection of cold cuts and cheese in the deli section and bread or rolls in the bakery department on those days when you don't feel like cooking a full meal.
