Sift dry ingredients together. Add milk and egg. Beat well. Peel and core apples, then slice apples into ¼” thick rings.
Dip rings into batter and drop into a Dutch oven with 1” to 1 ½” hot 375°F melted shortening. Fry until golden brown on both sides, about 1 ½ minutes each side. You may need to flip rings over half way through cooking to fry both sides.
Drain on a cake cooling rack or paper towels. Sprinkle cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar over the top of fritters and serve hot.
