Pour hot water over dates cool. Cream shortening, sugar, and egg. Add cooled dates. Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and baking soda add to date mixture. Put into greased 8" x 12" baking pan. Sprinkle nuts on top. Bake at 350°F for 40 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream or sauce.
