During the Great Depression and the war years of the 1940s, Betty rose to the challenge of helping America's families. Using her radio program, newspaper columns, and booklets (7 million copies of her booklet Your Share were distributed), she advised families on maintaining an adequate diet despite diminished wages and war-rationed foods. She was so respected that the United States Office of War Information asked her to do a special radio show on the NBC network called Our Nation's Rations. Her popularity soared (in 1945 she was the second best-known woman in America after Eleanor Roosevelt!), and she was pronounced the "First Lady of Food."
