In saucepan, combine brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves and water, and boil gently until sugar is dissolved. Pour the hot syrup over bread cubes and toss gently. Add raisins (or mixture of raisinsand currants), walnuts and cheese and toss again until blended. Butter a 1 1/2 -quart casserole or baking pan, and spoon mixture in evenly. This will be quite thick. Bake in 375° oven for about 15 to 20 minutes or until thoroughly heated through. Serve either warm or cold with ice cream or sweetened whipped cream.
