Toss together dates and baking soda in a medium bowl. Pour boiling water over mixture; set aside to cool. In a separate bowl, blend together butter or margarine and sugar. Beat in egg; add vanilla and salt. Pour into cooled date mixture; stir in flour. Mixture will be very thin. Pour into a greased 13"x9" baking pan. Sprinkle batter with chocolate chips. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes; let cool. Cut into squares to serve.
Turn store-bought whipped cream into something really special....stir in 2 to 3 tablespoons of a favorite-flavor jam, then dollop over slices of pie or cake.
