Brown sausage; drain. Remove stems from mushrooms and chop finely; leave caps whole. Sauté stems, onions, and garlic in butter. Add sausage, bread crumbs, and 1/2 cup cheese. Spoon mixture evenly into each mushroom cap. Place on a greased baking sheet. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Bake at 350° for about 25 minutes, or till browned. Serve warm.
