The Best Date Bars

Ingredients

Crust:
1/2 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour

Filling:
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 eggs, beaten
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped dates
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
powdered sugar (optional)

Directions:

Crust:
Mix butter, sugar, and flour until crumbly. Press evenly in a greased 9x9-inch or 7x11-inch pan. Bake at 400° for 10–12 minutes. Do not brown the Crust.

Filling:
Mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. Beat eggs with brown sugar and add dates; blend well. Add flour mixture, vanilla, and nuts. Spread over baked Crust and bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Cut into squares or bars while hot. May dust with powdered sugar, if desired.
