THE "GOLD MEDAL" FLOUR

Directions:

Many of Betty Crocker's recipes include flour, and she recommends Gold Medal, of course. "Gold Medal" was the name given to the flour that the Washburn Crosby Company entered into competition at the Millers' International Exhibition in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1880. Cadwallader C. Washburn and his three grades of spring wheat swept the gold, silver and bronze medals, beating all other competitors at the exhibition. It seemed like a good idea to name the flour Gold Medal in celebration of the victory, and the first packages bearing that name were shipped in August 1880.
