Measure shortening into bowl. Add salt and half of flour. Stir with spoon until ingredients cream together and mixture is smooth and satiny. Add water and remaining flour. Stir with spoon until mixture clings together in ball. Roll out as desired. Shape and flute edge so that it is thin and low do not be afraid to handle. Makes 1 9-inch pastry shell.
Spread ground nuts evenly over bottom of unbaked pastry shell. Arrange apple slices overlapped in orderly fashion around outer edge of bottom of pastry shell then arrange another circle inside that and another until entire bottom is covered. Combine sugar, cinnamon, and flour sprinkle evenly over fruit. Bake at 375 degrees F. for 40 to 45 minutes or until fruit is tender and cooked. If desired, serve warm topped with whipped cream.
Variation
Apple Kuchen with Custard: Arrange apples in bottom of unbaked pastry shell as described above. Combine 2 eggs, pinch salt, 3 tablespoons cream or rich milk, and 3 to 4 tablespoons sugar. Pour over apples. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes or until fruit is tender.
