Scald milk; stir in sugar, salt, and butter; cool to luke warm. Measure very warm water into large mixing bowl. Sprinkle in yeast, stirring until dissolved. Add lukewarm milk mixture. Add beaten egg and flour. Stir until blended; spread batter in well-greased 9x13x2-inch baking pan. Arrange apple slices on top.
Topping:
Cut butter into mixture of brown sugar, flour, and spices. Sprinkle over apples; cover. Let rise in warm place until double in bulk, about 1 hour. Bake at 400° for 30 minutes.
