Steam asparagus until just tender. Drain and set aside.
Make a white sauce by melting butter. Stir in flour and add salt and pepper. Add milk, stirring constantly, and cook over low heat until smooth. Blend in 1/2 cup grated cheese, stirring until smooth. Combine white sauce with asparagus, onion, and eggs. Pour mixture into a 1 1/2-quart greased casserole. Top with crumbs and remaining 1/4 cup cheese. Bake at 350° for 15–20 minutes or until casserole is bubbly and cheese melts.
