Betty, Will You Marry Me?
Betty Crocker sounded so appealing on the radio that she began attracting serious suitors. By the mid-forties she had received at least ten marriage proposals, including one from a gentleman who said that if Betty was unavailable, could she recommend someone that she worked with who might be interested? An ad ran in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST and AMERICAN magazines in 1945 in which General Mills graciously thanked the gentlemen, but politely declined, saying, "when you remember that the Betty Crocker staff already has a full-time job helping millions of American homemakers learn the secrets of fluffy, fine-textured cakes, crisp, flaky piecrust and golden-brown biscuits… well, you can see why Betty Crocker just CAN'T marry anyone."
