As early as 1925, the Betty Crocker Kitchens started asking homemakers to help ensure the quality of recipes by testing them in their own homes. Later, visitors to the Betty Crocker Kitchens were asked to sign up, and some tested recipes for many years. Other home testers were recruited by marketing research firms to join the panel, which at one time was composed of about 2,000 testers.
