Letters, Letters, Letters

Betty Crocker got her start by answering letters requesting advice and recipes. Some requests are humorous, some are touching. Some of the most touching came during the Depression and World War II years. Here are some examples:

"I wonder if you know how much your talks over the radio mean to some of us. I am a young girl who has to stay home and cook for a large family while my parents work. I try to make the home just as pleasant as if Mother were right at home. Now that's a problem in itself, but since I've been listening to your talks, I find some things aren't as puzzling as they used to be. My little sisters are just crazy about nice pretty cakes, and you can imagine how much the pretty counts to them, so I will wait anxiously for your booklet on cakes."

"You don't know how much you have helped me. You have opened my eyes and lightened my heart. My husband is just making a living for my four children and myself. He has had his wages cut terribly. I must try and do something. You have told me over the radio, you are so wonderful. Would you please send me a good bread and biscuit recipe, also a cheap cake recipe?"
