Consumer Services Department Under the leadership of Marjorie Child Husted, the Betty Crocker Home Service Department had responded since the 1920s to the flood of letters asking for cooking advice. Eventually this department evolved into the Betty Crocker Kitchens, which develops and tests new products, recipes and cookbooks, and into the Consumer Services Department, which responds to consumers' inquiries. Staff members use a variety of means to communicate with consumers, including the mail, toll-free phone lines, and, most recently, fax and E-mail. They respond to about 600,000 consumers each year.
