Since these original recipe ingredients are available in Chinese food stores only during the Chinese New Year, any of the following, in any combination, may be substituted:
FRUIT:
Dates, raisins, prunes, maraschino cherries, preserved or candied kumquats candied ginger, citron, orange peel, red or green cherries or mixed glacéed fruit.
NUTS:
Almonds, chestnuts, walnuts, lichee nuts, dried dragon's eyes, watermelon seeds, canned ginkgo nuts.
NOTE: The preserved fruit should be pitted, then cut in quarters if large, in half if small, or chopped coarsely. The candied fruit should be cut in narrow strips the nuts, shelled and blanched.
