Pain Perdue (Lost Bread or French Toast)

Ingredients

1 (5-ounce) can evaporated milk
2 eggs, well beaten
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
5 slices French bread
1 cup oil or butter
1 powdered sugar

Directions:

Mix together evaporated milk, eggs, sugar, and vanilla; dip each slice of bread into this mixture, coating well. Drain off excess batter and fry in hot oil or butter at 375° until brown; turn and brown other side. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
