In a large saucepan bring to boil beans, cubed ham, stock, onion, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, salt, oil or fat, and instant coffee. Pour into a lightly-greased 2-quart casserole and bake for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Add more liquid if necessary. Serve topped with optional bacon pieces.
