In advance, precook the onion in the butter fry the bacon, drain, and crumble. Place the onion and bacon in a 12-inch Dutch oven and add the hash browns, soup, sour cream, 1/2 the cheese, and 3/4 of the stick of butter. Mix all ingredients and bake at about 350°F for 1 hour, using 4-6 under the oven and 16-18 on the lid. Then add the rest of the butter, cheese, and the corn flakes and continue to cook for another 1/2 hour.
