Preheat oven to 375°. Combine brown sugar, bread crumbs, and cloves. Press the mixture into the ham. Place ham in a roasting pan. Bake at 375° for 15 minutes or until sugar melts. Drizzle honey, sherry, or sweet pickle vinegar over ham. Bake at 375° for 15 minutes.
Note: These directions apply to a Virginia ham that has been cured for at least 12 months. If the ham has been cured less than 12 months, follow the instructions on the wrapper or hang the ham and allow it to age.
Fun Fact: Famous since the mid-1700s for its salt-cured hams, Smithfield recently (2002) celebrated the 100th birthday of its oldest ham, which was cured in 1902. This ham, which is on display still today at the Isle of Wight County Museum in Virginia, may very well be the world's oldest edible dried meat.
