Turkey isn’t just for Thanksgiving. It’s an any-meal, any-day, any-time-of-year kind of bird! And no wonder, when you can choose from whole turkey, turkey breast, ground turkey, turkey sausage, turkey bacon, turkey ham, turkey cutlets, turkey tenderloins and, don’t forget, those jumbo turkey drumsticks that are just made for grilling. Use turkey as you would chicken. It’s just as versatile and nutritious.
Buying a whole bird? Whole ready-to-cook turkeys can range in size from 8 to 24 pounds, and there’s no difference in quality between fresh and frozen. Store whole frozen turkeys in your freezer at 0° for up to 12 months. Keep fresh whole turkeys in the refrigerator and used within 1 to 2 days after buying them. How much should you buy? Whether it’s your first turkey or your tenth, that’s always the question! Allow about 1 pound of uncooked whole turkey per serving. That makes enough for a feast - and leftovers, too!
