Spread toasted bread with butter and place in a shallow bowl. Gently heat milk, sugar and nutmeg in a small saucepan over low heat; stir until sugar dissolves. Pour over toast; let stand until toast swells up and absorbs milk mixture. Serve warm.
Tip: Set aside day-old bread for French toast…it absorbs milk better than bakery-fresh bread.
