1 In a spice grinder or blender, combine the star anise, fennel, juniper, and salt. Grind until fine, about 1 minute.
2 In a large shallow bowl, combine the contents of the spice grinder with the cinnamon and black and red pepper. Add the oil and stir well. Rub the mixture all over the ribs. Place the ribs in the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate 24 hours, stirring occasionally.
3 Place a barbecue grill or broiler rack about 6 inches from the heat source. Preheat the grill or broiler. Pat the ribs dry, then grill or broil the ribs, turning them frequently, until browned and cooked through, about 20 minutes. Serve hot.
