Yield: 100 plump, spongy cookies
Sift 6 cups of flour with salt and spices. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg. Beat all together until light. Add molasses and vinegar, then sifted dry ingredients. Lastly, add baking soda dissolved in boiling water. If necessary, add more flour to make a soft dough. Drop by teaspoonfuls on greased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake 8–10 minutes in a moderate (350°) oven.
