Set aside 1/4 cup of swirl mixture from mix. Combine dry quick bread mix, remaining swirl mixture and spices; mix well. Stir in shortening with a fork until mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Add egg; mix well. Shape dough into 1-1/4 inch balls; roll in reserved swirl mixture. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 14 minutes, or until edges are set. Let cool for one minute before removing from baking sheets.
Tip: The simplest centerpiece can be the most festive. Set 2 or 3 pillar candles on a white plate, then tuck shiny Christmas balls, seashells or fresh flowers around the base to highlight the season.
