Cream sugar and butter until light and fluffy. Add eggs. Add flour and baking soda alternately with buttermilk. Add orange juice. Fold in pecans, dates, and candy orange slices that have been dredged in the reserved flour (also add the reserved flour). Fold in coconut. Bake at 250° in a greased and floured tube pan 11/2 hours, or until cake tester comes out clean.
Glaze:
Boil until sugar is dissolved.
