Blend together shortening and brown sugar; beat in eggs. In a separate bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, salt and spices; mix well. Stir in raisins, fruit and nuts, if using. Add to shortening mixture along with milk and vinegar; mix well. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 325 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.
