Scoop avocados into a large bowl. Add garlic and juice of 1/2 lime; mash to desired consistency. Gently stir in tomato, onion, salt and juice of remaining 1/2 lime; add jalapeño and cilantro, if using. Cover and chill for 30 minutes to one hour; stir again before serving.
Tip: Try serving "light" dippers with hearty full-flavored dips and spreads. Fresh veggies, pita wedges, baked tortilla chips and multi-grain crispbread are all sturdy enough to scoop up dips yet won't overshadow the flavor of the dip.
