Preheat oven to 375°. Beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add egg and almond extract and beat until blended. Sift together flour, soda, salt, and nutmeg. Gradually add to creamed mixture and beat well. Stir in oatmeal. Shape dough into 1 1/4-inch balls. Place on ungreased cookie sheets and make a hollow in each ball. Bake for about 12 minutes. Cool on racks. Then place a small amount of jelly in each hollow and sprinkle with chopped almonds.
Note: Any flavor jam or jelly you prefer can be used instead of cherry.
