Preheat oven to 350°. Blend together flour, butter, and sugar until crumbly. Stir in nuts. Press 2 3/4 cups mixture into an ungreased 9x13-inch pan.
To remaining mixture add cinnamon, soda, salt, sour cream, vanilla, and egg. Blend well. Stir in apples. Spoon evenly over base. Bake 30–40 minutes until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cut into squares.
