Melt butter; add sugar, egg and water. Mix well. Sift flour, soda, and baking powder. Add to mixture to make batter the consistency of soft biscuit dough. Bake at 375° in 8-inch-square pan greased with butter for 20 minutes. This recipe may be doubled. To serve, split cake when cool, through the middle. Crush 2 quarts of strawberries and put part between the layers, the remainder on top. Serve with whipped cream, if desired.
