Cut mozzarella into 1/2-inch slices and then into 1/2-inch strips. Place flour in a shallow bowl. In another shallow bowl, beat eggs, salt, and pepper thoroughly with a fork. Place bread crumbs in the bowl.
Dip mozzarella strips in flour, then in beaten eggs. Dredge thoroughly in bread crumbs, making sure cheese is thoroughly coated with crumbs so that it does not ooze in frying.
Arrange strips in a single layer on a large platter lined with wax paper. Chill at least 1 hour (chilling will prevent bread crumb coating from falling off when frying).
In a 12-inch skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat until haze forms. Fry mozzarella in 2 batches, turning once, until lightly golden on both sides. Drain on paper towels. To serve, arrange on platter and serve immediately.
Fun Fact: In 1969, Sears, Roebuck & Co. was the largest retailer in the world. Sears executives decided to consolidate the thousands of employees in offices distributed throughout the Chicago area into one building in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The Sears Tower, completed in 1973, is one of the tallest and most recognizable landmarks in the Chicago skyline and in the world. Including its antennas, the total height of Sears Tower is 1,725 feet. The Sears Tower has gone through several owners over the years, but Sears has retained the naming rights for the building. However, in March 2009, London-based insurance broker Willis Group Holdings, Ltd. leased a large portion of the building and obtained its naming rights. The building is now called Willis Tower.
