Trim crust from bread slices and spread with soft butter. Brown sausage and add cheese. Place 6 slices buttered bread in bottom of 3 quart casserole dish spread with half of sausage-cheese mixture. Combine eggs and milk pour half over sausage and cheese. Repeat layers: Bread, sausage-cheese, egg-milk. Press down with spoon so milk comes to top of dish. Chill in refrigerator overnight. Bake uncovered for 1 hour at 375 degrees.
