1. Heat oven to 350°. Have baking sheets ready.
2. Mix oats, flour, and baking soda. Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl with electric mixer until fluffy. Beat in buttermilk, poppy seeds, and vanilla. On low speed, gradually beat in oats mixture. By hand, stir in currants. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto baking sheets. Bake 10 to 12 minutes until lightly browned. Cool on baking sheets 1 minute. Remove to wire racks to cool.
