Toss beef cubes with salt, pepper, and 1/2 cup flour until thoroughly coated. Place in bottom of large slow cooker or iron pot. Add garlic, onions, mushrooms, and celery. Stir Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste into beef broth. Pour over meat and vegetables; mix together well. Cover and cook slowly 5-6 hours in fireplace or 7-12 hours in slow cooker on low setting.
One hour before serving, turn cooker to high or move pot to hotter place over fire. Make smooth paste of 3 tablespoons flour and wine. Stir into meat and vegetables; cook only until thickened. If using iron pot, empty immediately into covered soup tureen, as wine should not stand in iron. Serve over hot buttered noodles.
