Preheat oven to 375°. Cut shortening into dry ingredients with pastry blender or knives until mixture is consistency of coarse cornmeal. Make well in the center of these ingredients. Pour in milk. Stir lightly until all ingredients are moistened and dough cleans the sides of the bowl; not more than 1/2 minute. Turn dough onto lightly floured surface. Knead 10 times. With floured rolling pin, roll dough into 9x12-inch rectangle about 1/2-inch thick. Cover with apples. Starting on the long end, roll-up jellyroll-style. Pinch side edge together. Cut tube into 10–12 slices and place in greased 9x13-inch cake pan. Pour sauce over slices and bake for 45 minutes or until apples are tender.
Sauce:
Combine all ingredients in saucepan; bring to a full boil. Boil one minute. Pour over sliced apple roll.
