In large skillet, melt Crisco on high heat. Add flour and stir constantly until it is slightly brown. Remove from heat. Let cool. Mix together the milk and water. Add to Crisco-flour mixture and stir until well blended. Add tomatoes. Put back on heat and stir until thickened. Add salt.
Variation: To make Old-Fashioned White Gravy, use the same recipe, but omit the tomatoes. Black pepper is also good in this gravy. This was always an old standby when food was scarce during depression days. Some of those “necessities” turned out to be favorite foods.
