Place cabbage in medium bowl. For dressing, blend together mayonnaise (or salad dressing), vinegar (may substitute with lemon juice), sugar, and salt. Pour over cabbage toss lightly to coat vegetables. Chill.
Variations
Cabbage Tomato Slaw: Add 1 medium diced tomato.
Cabbage Pineapple Slaw: Add 1/2 cup drained crushed chopped pineapple.
Vegetable Slaw: Add 1/4 cup shredded carrot, 1 tablespoon chopped onion, 2 tablespoons diced green pepper, and 1/4 cup diced celery. Stir 1/4 teaspoon dry mustard or 1/2 teaspoon prepared mustard into dressing.
Cabbage Peanut Slaw: Add 1/2 cup salted peanuts to salad.
Cabbage Apple Slaw: Add 1/2 to 1 diced unpeeled apple .
Cabbage Raisin Slaw: Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup raisins to salad. Or cut-up dates may be used in place of raisins.
Cabbage Shrimp Slaw: Add 1 can (4 1/2 ounces) small deveined shrimp.
