2 cups sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
4 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon cloves
1 cup pitted prunes, cooked and chopped
1 cup walnuts chopped
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter softened
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 tablespoon corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 9x13-inch pan. Combine sugar, oil, and eggs and beat till light. Mix baking soda with buttermilk. Sift flour, salt, cinnamon, and cloves. To creamed mixture, add buttermilk mixture alternately with sifted dry ingredients. Stir in prunes and nuts. Pour into greased pan. Bake for 1 hour or until cake tests done. While cake is baking, prepare glaze by mixing in a saucepan the sugar, butter, 1/2 cup buttermilk, 1 teaspoon baking soda, and corn syrup. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. When cake is done, remove from oven and pour glaze over top of hot cake. Cool cake before cutting.
Variation: Add 1 cup chocolate chips to cake batter.
