Cream together sugar and shortening. Beat in eggs and water. Add fruit. Add flour, cloves, cinnamon, baking powder, soda, salt, and nuts. Mix well and set aside.
Grease inside of 6 wide-mouth pint canning jars. don’t grease the rims. Pour one cup of batter into each prepared jar. Do not use more or it will overflow jar. Place open jars evenly spaced on cookie sheet. Place in 325° preheated oven. Bake about 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Remove jars one at a time. Wipe rim around top. Place metal disk on top in place, then twist ring on to secure. It will seal.
Editor's Extra: This can also be baked in two 5x9-inch loaf pans at the same temperature for about 1 hour. Check with a toothpick to make sure it’s done.
