2 cups vegetable shortening
1 cup sugar granulated
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
4 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
Cream shortening, sugars, eggs, vanilla, and almond flavoring till fluffy. Sift flour, baking soda, and cream of tartar together and add gradually to creamed mixture. Chill dough. Mold dough into 1-inch balls. Place onto greased cookie sheet. Flatten each cookie with bottom of drinking glass dipped in sugar. Bake 10 minutes at 350 degrees F. Cool on wire rack. Store in covered container. Makes 5 dozen cookies.
Variations: Add chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or raisins to batter before chilling. Drop by spoonfuls onto cookie sheet, and bake as above.
