Separate onion slices into rings. Combine milk, buttermilk, and egg in a medium mixing bowl. Add onion rings and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Spread flour on a plate. Heat oil to 375° in a medium saucepan or deep-fat fryer. Remove onion rings from milk mixture and dip one at a time into flour. Fry in hot oil until golden brown. Cook no more than 8–10 rings at one time to prevent oil from cooling below 375°. Remove from oil, drain on paper towels, and sprinkle with salt.
