Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs, apples, and water. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices. Add to apple mixture, and stir in nuts. Pour batter into jars, filling about 1/2 full. Bake at 325° for 45–53 minutes. When done, remove one jar at a time from oven. Cut off excess, wipe edges of jar clean, put on scalded lid, and screw band tight. After cooling, you can tighten band.
Variations: (1) Two cups canned pumpkin, (2) 2 cups applesauce, (3) or 1 3/4 cups applesauce and 1/4 cup crushed pineapple.
