Mix hot water, sugar, salt, and margarine; cool to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Stir egg and 3 cups flour in lukewarm mixture. Beat until smooth. Add rest of flour, mixing well. Place dough in greased bowl; brush top with soft margarine. Cover tightly with wax paper or foil. (I like bowls with lids that fit tightly.) Refrigerate until double or until needed (up to 4 days).
To use, cut off amount of dough required and form into favorite shapes. Cover. Let rise in warm draft-free place until doubled, about 1 hour. Brush with melted margarine. Bake in 400° oven about 10–15 minutes.
