Combine sugar, salt, and flour; add to egg yolks and vanilla. Heat milk in saucepan; slowly add egg mixture. Cook until thick. Arrange wafers and bananas in shallow 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Add pudding.
Meringue:
To make meringue, beat egg whites till frothy, then gradually add sugar, then vanilla and beat until very stiff. Spread over pudding and bake at 400° until golden brown. Serve warm or cold.
